Reflections on Suicide as a Universal, Historical and Social Human Phenomenon

Abstract
Suicide is a complex and universal phenomenon that has been studied throughout history, transcending cultural, social, and temporal barriers. This article explores suicide from a multidimensional perspective, integrating psychological, social, cultural, and historical factors. It highlights the importance of understanding suicide not merely as an individual act but as a reflection of broader societal and structural issues. The paper reviews the historical evolution of suicide, from its acceptance in ancient civilizations like Egypt and Greece to its stigmatization in medieval Europe and its modern conceptualization as a public health issue. The role of cultural, economic, and political determinants in shaping suicide rates is emphasized, with particular attention to the impact of neoliberalism and social inequalities. The article also discusses the need for a multicomponent prevention approach, involving universal, selective, and indicated strategies, to address the rising suicide rates globally. By recognizing suicide as a social problem rather than solely a mental health issue, the paper calls for collective action and structural changes to reduce its prevalence and impact.
