Abstract

Many are the reasons why the creation of a specialty in child and adolescent clinical psychology is important, such as the onset of mental disorders at early ages, the significance of early detection and intervention in mental health, and the prevalence of suicide data among teenagers, among others. However, this article does not aim to put forth more arguments for the need to establish the specialty, but rather to outline the foundations on which we believe the practice of child and adolescent clinical psychology should be based and what it uniquely contributes to the mental health care of children and adolescents. To achieve this, we reflect on different points, such as the importance of knowledge about developmental stages, the characteristics of child and adolescent mental health services, the role of the family, the impact of adverse events in childhood, and the distinctive features of diagnosis and treatment in this population. The fundamental conclusion is that the unique characteristics of clinical psychology make it indispensable for providing excellent mental health care to children and adolescents.
